A Few Last Minute Additions

So it looks like we'll have more room for stuff on the trip out to LA for the DFC Disneyana Expo, so we've added a few more items to the ever-expanding haul including:

  • A nearly full run of Belgian Mickey Magazine comics 1-318, missing only 4 issues
  • 7 Dalmatian figures from the very rare Seven China series, which predates the film and Enesco series by 2 years
  • A full service for 8 of Fantasia-inspired Fantasy Silverplate by Oneide, including reproduction pattern catalog with Fantasia art
  • A beautiful Vernon Kilns Milkweed Dance Carafe
  • A full tea set from English company Weetman in pastel colors
  • An exceptionally rare Disney WWII theatrical program from Dec 10, 1941 advocating the US entry to the war.  It should be noted that this was printed prior to Pearl Harbor but for a performance 3 days after Pearl Harbor.  One of only 4 known copies.
  • A near-complete run of Persistence of Vision magazine, missing only issues 8,9
  • An exceptionally rare Canadiana Pottery figure of the Pegasus from Fantasia
  • A rarely seen Donald Duck pirate flag only sold at the Pirates Shop in Disneyland waaaaay back when
  • Very rare Fantasia R70 door panel poster
  • A set of 1951 Walt Disney Character Merchandise Division Catalog pages
And a whole lot more.  I'll try to post photos of some of these items in the coming days.

Prepping for Disneyana Expo at the Disneyana Fan Club

So its been very quiet here at the VDA blog, and I do apologize for that.  But it has been for a good reason.  This year, in addition to the Dayton Show last month, I will be setting up at the biggest Disneyana show in the country, the Disneyana Fan Club Expo in Garden Grove, just down the street from Disneyland.  The show is on July 20th, come on down!  I've been gathering lots of new things to offer, something for everyone I'm sure.  Stay tuned!

Army Navy E Award

During WWII, the War department, and specifically the Departments of the Army and Navy, instituted an award for outstanding performance of a war production facility.  The was called the E award, E for Excellence.  During the course of the war over 4000 companies won the award.  For each company that won the award, each war worker received this very nice sterling pin
And the company itself was awarded this flag that it could fly demonstrating to the world at large that they were an outstanding war production facility.
This flag has 4 stars.  For those companies that qualified for an E award multiple times, for each award after the first they would receive a star on their flag.  So this flag denotes that the company won the E award 5 times.

According to the War department, at the end of the program 4283 plants received the award, and out of those 820 received 4 stars, with only 8 receiving 6 stars.  Each company was allowed to continue to fly the flag and employees could wear the pin even after the program ended.  So in theory, any companies still around today could fly the flag.  I wonder if any do?

Albedo Anthropomorphics

In 1979 Steve Gallacci published a small fanzine titled Huzzah!, which featured a 4-page story Erma Felna.  Five years later he would launch his own independent comic book featuring this story, Albedo Anthropomorphics.  Copies of Huzzah! are extremely difficult to find.
The first issue of Albedo was originally printed with a 5-color cover.  Only 500 copies were printed in this way, making this one of the smallest print runs for a first printing of a comic book ever.
The second issue of Albedo features the first appearance of a character that has survived to this day, and is still being published - Usagi Yojimbo.
Only 2000 copies of this issue in the world, but very few of those have a sketch signed by Stan Sakai on the first page!
